Fainting After A Flight Could Be From A Blood Clot – New Study

A new five year study revealed that “Fainting may be an atypical symptom of [pulmonary embolism], but fainting associated with recent air travel is a dangerous combination” according to study author, Dr. Robert Rifenburg, at the Resurrection Medical Center near Chicago’s O’Hare airport.

Fainting After Air Travel May Indicate Pulmonary Embolism

A blood clot frequently forms in a vein of the legs. This condition is called a deep vein thrombosis or DVT.  If such a blood clot in a leg vein suddenly breaks loose and travels through the veins and the heart to the lungs it can cause a blockage in the lungs, which is called a pulmonary embolism or PE.  In a worst case scenario this can cause serious damage to the lungs and even be life threatening.

Compression Stockings can Help to Prevent Blood Clots and Pulmonary Embolisms with the Graduated Compression they Apply to the Wearer’s Legs.

Graduated compression means that the compression socks or stockings are the tightest at the ankle area and gradually become less and less tight going up the leg.  This graduated pressure helps keeps blood from stagnating and pooling in the veins of the legs thereby preventing the formation of dangerous blood clots.

Especially in the close quarters of an airplane and for any long distance travel by train, bus or automobile where one will be sitting for long hours immobile wearing flight socks or travel socks and stockings or compression pantyhose can be very beneficial in boosting venous blood circulation.
