If you are like most people who are wearing compression stockings you are probably dreading the daily wrestling act of putting them on when you get up and taking them off before you go to sleep.

Depending on what the compression level of your socks, stockings or pantyhose is, this daily event can feel like anywhere from a light weight to a heavy weight challenge depending on your or your caregiver’s physical fitness and strength.

I must admit, I may have been exaggerating somewhat trying to make a point here, but nevertheless donning and doffing compression stockings can be quite a struggle for many individuals, especially those who have limited hand strength or due to other conditions such as arthritis. Now, here comes the good news …

Donning and Doffing Your Compression Stockings May No Longer Be A Problem

There is a new Doff N’ Donner in town or better in the USA.  You can probably guess from the catchy name that we are talking about an innovative method and invention that promises to make putting on AND taking off your compression stockings a no-sweat process.

What is so innovative and unique about this new Donning and Doffing Device for Compression Stockings?

According to the inventor Ray Fikes, a caregiver himself, the Doff N’ Donner was specifically designed to make putting on your compression stockings and taking them off a safe and virtually effortless task.

The principle of the Doff N’ Donner described in simple terms works as follows:  The infinitely shaped water balloon (in more technical terms called a toroid) gathers up the compression stocking by rolling it onto itself.  Once it is loaded onto the Doff N’ Donner the compression stocking can simply be unrolled onto your leg or arm from the device without any stretching or pulling.  You can even use the device itself to straighten out any remaining wrinkles in the compression stocking.

Due to its incredible flexibility this donning and doffing device can apply or remove compression stockings to or from pretty much any size leg and under any conditions.  For example, wet, lotion covered or bandaged legs are not a problem at all.  Not even long fingernails get in the way with the Doff N’ Donner device.

You are probably aware of the fact that most brands of compression stockings are not exactly cheap.  Therefore as an additional bonus, the Doff N’ Donner also extends the life of your compression stockings by preventing them from being subject to excessive pulling and stretching as it can be the case with more traditional methods of donning and doffing.

If you would like to see the Doff N’ Donner in action you can follow the link below to watch the How-To videos at the Doff N’ Donner website. If you should decide to try the Doff N’ Donner yourself please let us know in the comments below how you liked it or share any additional tips you may have for other users.  Thank you.

  • Looking at this type of donner and doffer now. Tried the frames and they're not suitable for people who have limited foot flexion (got to be able to point the toe past 30 degrees to get it thru the stocking holder)
However, the advantage the frames have over this type is that you don't have to bend right down as the frames have long handles. Bending down and exerting coordinated force at this level can be difficult or impossible for someone with limited flexibility who may be barely able to reach their toes.
Seems to me a combination between the two is needed.

  • Came across your blog via HRG. I LOVE my compression socks (and I had to get pink, too). I wear them when I run and keep them on for a little bit afterward. I actually have three pairs, two of the expensive runner compression socks, and an ugly pair that I think I borrowed from hospital closet (I work in a hospital) that are used to prevent deep vein thromboses, haha. The latter pair I'll put on under my regular clothes after an intense workout.
