Compression Stockings and Venous Disease Studies – Bonn, Germany
The so called Bonn Vein Studies (1 and 2) were comprised of a population sampling of over 3,000 men and women of a very wide age range.
The studies found that the main risk factors for chronic vein disease of class C4, C5 and C6 (see table *1) are age, obesity and high blood pressure.
The background for the study was that even with frequent use of compression stockings there is still not enough reliable patient data concerning the frequency of use and experience with the treatment of medical compression stockings.
The study results established that compression stockings are the most frequently used treatment option for vein related illnesses in Germany. Unfortunately the studies also showed that there is a severe deficiency of treatment with compression stockings for chronic venous insufficiency.

C0: No visible or palpable signs of venous disease
C1: Telangiectasies (spider veins) or reticular veins
C2: Varicose veins
C3: Edema (of venous origin)
C4a: Pigmentation or eczema
C4b: Lipodermatosclerosis or athrophie blanche
C5: Healed venous ulcer
C6: Active venous ulcer
