Will Angioplasty and Stenting replace Compression Stockings in Managing Chronic DVT?

Angioplasty and Stenting may help Patients with Chronic DVT

There may be a new silver lining for chronic DVT patients based on the findings of a recent study.  The study was comprised of 106 patients (66 men and 40 women with a mean age of 57).

Preliminary findings showed that less invasive procedures like stenting and angioplasty may help to ease the symptoms patients with chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are suffering with.

Mark Garcia, MD, of Christiana Care Health Services in Newark, pointed out that this would be an “aggressive” approach to managing this condition, for which the current standard treatment consists of oral anticoagulant medications and wearing compression stockings.

According to Dr. Garcia this may eventually result in a new strategy and approach for treating this disease and its major complication, post-thrombotic syndrome.
